Alistair Overeem Eyes Boxing Ring with Vitali Klitschko as First Opponent

Somewhere in the Netherlands famed mixed martial artist and kickboxer Alistair Overeem has a trophy case that's bigger than my bedroom. Among his growing collection of awards, stands heavyweight title belts from Strikeforce and Dream, as well as a 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix Trophy. As any fighter would, Overeem is working to fill his monstrous trophy case, even if it means venturing into other combat sports.

Overeem already has MMA and kickboxing in the bag, but apparently that isn't enough. The 'Reem now speaks of a move to the boxing ring, where he hopes to meet WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko.

LiverKick.com is all over it:

"...In a recent interview he was asked what he would like to do after winning the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix and the answer almost came out of nowhere; he (Overeem) wants to fight Vitali Klitschko, the Heavyweight boxer. Every shred of data that MMA fans and personalities have been pumping out into the public has declared Boxing as a dead sport, but Boxing still has a glamorous sheen that neither kickboxing or MMA present, with it questionable that they will ever catch up."

The idea of an Overeem-Klitschko boxing match actually isn't all that far fetched. Overeem has established himself as a dual-sport athlete, competing in both mixed martial arts (Strikeforce and Dream) and kickboxing (K-1). However, doing so would mean taking even more time away from the other two sports. This has been Overeems problem over the past two years. Juggling MMA in two different promotions and competing in K-1 has proved a challenge for fans who would like to see him compete on a regular basis in either sport. Yet still, the possibility is still there.

Now, do I think Overeem has a chance against Vitali? Hell no!!! But it's good for boxing which, in turn, is good for Overeem, which is great for both MMA and kickboxing.

But while we're talking Overeem vs. Vitali Klitschko, why not just make it a kickboxing match? As BadLeftHook.com duly noted, Klitschko comes from a strong kickboxing background. Vitali was a champion kickboxer in the 1990's with a 34-1 professional record. So, if there's any chance Vitali can get past the complications and tedious stipulations of his boxing contract, an Overeem-Klitschko kickboxing match could be BIG! Otherwise, a boxing it is, but until any of this reaches contract status, it'll remain just talk and the subject of our imaginations.

Vitali Klitschko is the older brother to fellow heavyweight champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko. Vitali is set to square off against Polish WBO/NABO/IBF Champion Tomasz Adamek in September.

Alistair Overeem currently holds MMA heavyweight titles in the Dream and Strikeforce promotions. He defeated Fabricio Werdum last month in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. He will next face Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in the semifinals on September 10.

  7. If any MMA contender could make it in boxing they would. Why settle for MMA purses when boxing has quadruple the purse sizes....Most MMA stars were amatuer boxers that couldnt hack it....boxing will forever win over MMA

  8. Overeem should take on the better fighters in the UFC instead of fantasizing about fighting a champion boxer.
