USA Wrestling 2011 World Team Trials Chaser

Will '04 Olympic champ, Cael
Sanderson compete this weekend?
The road to the 2011 FILA World Championships begins at the USA Wrestling World Team Trials.

The trials will take place this weekend in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. On June 9th and 10th, the nation's best amatuer wrestlers will converge on the Cox Convention Center to determine this year's Men's and Women's Freestyle, and Men's Greco-Roman wrestling squad members. Team members will go on to compete at the FILA Wrestling World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Under the MMA radar.

Really, just about any competitor at the WWT's is fair game for a pro-MMA contract. But, there's a few names that we should definitely keep our eyes on.

2008 Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo has expressed an interest in pursuing MMA. This guy would make one scrappy flyweight or bantamweight. In 2009 he briefly took up amateur boxing in which he showed potential in the punching department. It almost looked like a mixed martial arts match was in the works between Cejudo and "Kid" Yamamoto back in 2008, but the prodigal son eventually returned to wrestling.

2010 U.S. Open Champion at 60kg Shawn Bunch has stated on multiple occassions that his intent is to fight MMA. Bunch has expressed concerns with balancing the two sports, and has decided to keep his focus on wrestling in the meantime. Bunch has entertained offers from Bellator and Japanese promotions Sengoku and Dream in the past. Expect Bunch to keep his attention on wrestling leading up to the 2012 Olympics in London. Otherwise, MMA remains one of Shawn Bunch's career goals.

Bunch is a member of 'Team Thirsty,' a group of wresters who have transitioned to MMA. Thirsty members include Mo Lawal, Jamil Kelly, and 'Suga' Rashad Evans.

Jordan Burroughs hasn't denied or confirmed pursuing a career in the cage, but his talents haven't gone unnoticed. A two-time NCAA Champion, and 2011 US Open Champion, Burroughs has caught the eyes of managers, promoters, and fans with his leg-crushing double-leg takedown. Burroughs is a monster, with athletic prowess fit for a career in the cage. Jordan Burroughs says his lifetime goal is to become an Olympic Gold Medalist.

Will Cael Sanderson hit the mats this weekend?

Who the hell knows??? If you hear something, drop me an email!!!

It looks very likely that one of the best American wresters ever will take to the mats this weekend. Flowrestling has reported that Sanderson is will be there in action, but no definite confirmation has come directly from Cael Sanderson himself.

As a 2004 Olympic Champion, Sanderson automatically qualifies for the WWT's. If Sanderson does compete, it's possible he could face one of his own pupils from Penn State, 2011 184 lb. D-1 champ Quentin Wright.

As it stands, there are no reports that Cael has officially registered. So, we probably won't know for sure whether Sanderson will suit up for the trials until he steps on the scale on Friday.

And you can always count on Mark Bader and the Flowrestling crew to keep things lively leading up to the festivities...
