Stratus Media Group Puts Finishing Touches on ProElite Acquisition, Launching MMA Events in 2011

Stratus Media Group finally closed the books on their acquisition of ProElite. The transaction began a year ago when Stratus first engaged ProElite in February of 2010. ProElite, once a fast rising major MMA promotion, ceased operations in October 2008, sitting stagnant for nearly a year and a half, while fighter contracts and other legal matters rittled its name. Now that Stratus has finally sealed the deal, it looks like the dust may have settled over the catastrophic ProElite brand.

ProElite is perhaps best known for its now defunct MMA promotion Elite XC. Elite XC was the first to present mixed martial arts on a major broadcast television network, CBS. They also aired their ShoXC series on Showtime. Elite XC established partnerships with several other promotions -- King of the Cage, Strikeforce, Dream, and Affliction-- all of which they had co-promoted events with. It should be noted that Cage Rage hasn't put on a show in years, and Affliction has sat decaying in the grave since 2009. Another ProElite partner, South Korean promotion Spirit Martial Challenge, has since scaled its operation to a sporadic amateur league. Then, there's Strikeforce, which I'm sure requires not explanation -- business as usual.

The best hope for ProElite is that it can rest on the backing of Stratus Media Group, a very successful, diverse media, marketing, and entertainment company. If Stratus can re-establish ProElite's international partnerships with the confidence of Stratus' good name, success could be on the horizon for ProElite. And maybe I'm really stretching, but if FEG could somehow find itself in the Stratus-ProElite mix, maybe Japanese MMA could catch a few crumbs.
