Weekend Wrap-Up: 5-21 Results from Around the Pro Circuit

Either I slept through a major apocolyptic event, or the catastrophic end-of-the-world events, that forced me to purchase a multi-thousand dollar shopping list of preparation items to include a dozen cans of corned beef hash, two shotguns, and some Playboy mags (you never know), were all just a big hoax. Needless to say, I'll be having a garage sale next weekend. Anyway, since we're all still here, we can continue to enjoy the sport we all love.

Here's some post-apocolyptic weekend results:
  • Bellator 45 posted finals matches in the featherweight and light heavyweight divisions. Patricio “Pitbull” Freire owned Daniel Straus for three rounds en route to unanimous decision settting up a second meeting with current Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Warren. Warren served Patricio his first loss last season to take home the title. In the 205 lb. championship finals, French import Christian M'Pumbu (by way of Republic of Congo) defeated Rage in the Cage veteran Richard Hale. M'Pumbu sent Hale to the floor late in the third round with a crushing right hand. Following up with a brief ground-and-pound session, M'Pumbu struck to an early stoppage at 4:17 of the third round.
  • Mamed Khalidov stepped on the career stepping stone that was Matt Lindland. Lindland was the first wrestler of world class caliber that Khalidov has faced in twenty-nine career pro fights, but that didn't stop Khalidov who scooped Lindland's head in a guillotine choke just moments into the first round. In the freak show of the night, James Thompson showed that size does doesn't matter unless you're wrestling your girlfriend. Thompson made the massive Mariusz Pudzanowski his girlfriend, mounting the World's Strongest Man and securing an arm triangle to draw the tap.
  • Reigning BAMMA Middleweight Champion Tom Watson offered Murilo 'Ninja' Rua his second loss in a row at BAMMA 6. Watson and Rua engaged in an all out war in round one of the middleweight championship bout. However, Watson's striking assault tore away at Rua in the following two rounds. In the third round, a stifling kick to the head followed up with puches, crippled Rua, drawing the referee stoppage at the 2:06 mark. Another middleweight bout pitted former UFC welterweight title contender Frank Trigg against Welsh boxing threat John Phillips. An intelligent Frank Trigg took the fight to the mat early, after which an elbow campaign opened a nasty gouge over Phillips' right eye. The cut, drew a doctor's stoppage 2:41 into the first frame.
