Around the Pro Circuit: Paddy Thompson and Steve Dunn to Battle for 170 lb. Title at AFO: New Year's Redemption

AFO welterweights to set it off for 2011.

New England's premiere mixed martial arts promotion, the American Fighting Organization (AFO), is known for two things -- holiday-themed events and excellent matchmaking. On Saturday, January 8, both will come together. As the spirit of Auld Lang Syne runs its course, two up-and-coming fighters, 170 lbers Paddy Thompson and Steve Dunn, will face off in a main event welterweight title fight at AFO's New Year's event "New Year's Redemption 3."

Current AFO welterweight champion Paddy Thompson is 9-3 in pro competition. Thompson lost the title earlier this year when he fell to Tim O'Connell at AFO: "Last Man Standing 2" last February. However Thompson had redemption in mind when he defeated O'Connell in a rematch at AFO's "Halloween Havoc" to reclaim the AFO welterweight title. Thompson is able to mix it up in the stand-up and grappling departments but has a vulnerable back, as two of his three losses were due to rear-naked choke.

The challenger, Steve "The Sandman" Dunn is undefeated in seven professional outings. Before making his MMA debut, "The Sandman" was a former street fighter in Brockton, Massachusetts, a hard nosed city known for producing the likes of Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler. The four-time Cage Fighting Xtreme veteran trains under the watchful eye of John Allan at the elite Wai Kru/Tapout-Boston school.
