ROC 33 and XFC 13 Light Up the East Coast

Two East coast promotions took to the cage last night as New Jersey-based Ring of Combat and Xtreme Fighting Championships of Florida presented knockout cards. Lou Neglia's Ring of Combat put five championship titles on the line. Meanwhile, about 1,000 miles down 95 South, Xtreme Fighting Championships tested the cage with its thirteenth show, XFC 13: "Unstoppable."

Ring of Combat put together a hefty fifteen bouts for its thirty-third installment, "ROC 33". Highlighting the card in its co-main event, top prospect Chris Weidman remained undefeated, taking challenger Valdir Arraujo to a decision. Weidman, a two-time D-1 All-American wrestler, improves to 4-0. In other title action, Gian Villante and Joseph Reyes squared off for the promotion's previously vacant ROC heavyweight title. Villante, an eight-time ROC veteran, came off a loss to Demetrius Richards at ROC 29 for the light heavyweight title. An early arm injury prevented Villante from continuing. However with renewed arm strength, Villante took out his win-less opponent, Reyes, to take home the heavyweight strap.

Xtreme Fighting Championships, Florida's leading mixed martial arts promotion, delivered non-stop action with XCF 13. The event aired live on HDNet, and featured a featherweight title fight between Luis Palmino and Jarrod Card in the main event. Bellator FC veteran Palamino went in the obvious favorite against reigning XFC bantamweight champion Jarrod Card. Palamino utilized superior striking, including a devastating third round leg kick that weakened Card for the remainder of the fight, to notch a five round decision over the former champion. The co-main event saw two heavies vying for the unofficial title of "Florida's best heavyweight." Chris Barnett defeated three-time Bodog fights veteran and American Top Team product Mario Rinaldi in what some might consider an upset. Barnett came into the event overweight, weighint in at 278 lbs. at the previous day's weigh-ins. Barnett also missed weight, tipping the scale at 315 lbs. at his previous fight in October, Martial Combat 12 in Singapore, in which he sufferred his first loss. In other action, Marianna Kheyfets, the promotion's star female fighter who suprised fans with a first round submission win over Kim Couture in her pro MMA debut at XFC 11, improves to 2-0 with a unanimous decision over Marissa Caldwell. But the evening did not go without controversy. A close decision between Joe Ray and XFC-Africa fighter Jeremy Smith brought forth yet another case of questionable judges' scorecards. Ray appeared to slightly edge a severely swollen-faced Smith with consistent grappling and striking, especially in the third round. But to the surprise of commentators Mike Schiavello and Guy Mezger and many fans at the St. Pete Times Forum, South Africa-based Jeremy Smith was ruled the winner in a close three-round contest.
