Pre-UFC 123 Throwback Videos: Lyoto Machida vs. BJ Penn

This weekend's UFC 123 card features two common historical opponents from the main and co-main events. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn met back in 2005 at K-1: "Heroes 1" in Saitama, Japan.

The fight was Penn's second under the K-1 banner, after juming ship to the FEG promotion from the UFC. At the time, Penn was involved in a contract dispute with the UFC. He abandoned the welterweight title when he departed from the UFC. Lyoto Machida was an undefeated up-and-coming light heavyweight prospect who had already scored notable wins over future UFC stars Rich Franklin and Stephan Bonnar. The fight was an open weight bout which featured a soft BJ Penn at 191, while Lyoto Machida tipped the scales at a healthy 220lbs. Machida went on to defeat Penn by way of unanimous decision.

On Saturday BJ Penn will take on long-time rival Matt Hughes in a highly anticipated rubber match at UFC 123. Lyoto Machida is set to face Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in a light heavyweight redemption bout, as both look to bounce back from devastating losses.
