UFC 123 Countdown Video and some Advice for Brock Lesnar

Race has always been one of the most sensitive topics of American water cooler conversation. However, that same sensitivity has made the perfect marketing tool in the sports world, particularly in the world of fighting. Some of the greatest battles of fight history have come by way of race vs. race match-ups: James Jeffries vs. Jack Johnson, Joe Louis vs. Rocky Marciano, even Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier I, II, and III were fueled by racial undertones between two African American fighters.

Today we approach another big fight with feelings of racial frustration, or at least racially motivated marketing: UFC 121's Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez for the UFC Heavyweight Title. This weekend reigning champ Lesnar will meet undefeated Mexican-American fighter Cain Velasquez in what is being pumped as a 'Clash of Titans' fight. Despite being undefeated, Cain's marketability has become a matter of question, and as a result the race card has been pulled to motivate media/fan attention. But a bold and boisterous Brock Lesnar never holds back. The following Lesnar comment, made in a Spike TV-UFC 121 preview video brought the race issue to the center of the Octagon: "Listen, when I get done whooping your ass, I'm gonna go drink a Corona and eat a burrito just for your Hispanic heritage. How about that?"

A Word of Advice for Mr. Lesnar:
Brock, your safety wouldn't be much of a concern if it were just Cain Velasquez you'd have to deal with following such comments, but my street experience tells me there could be any number of angry Latinos standing behind him. I'd tone it down and focus on the fight in the Octagon!
