Strikefore: Diaz vs. Noons 2 Post Trauma

And so the dust settles on another night of free mixed martial arts programming, courtesy Scott Coker and family. So, what did we learn last night? Some very random after thoughts:
  • Don't piss off Nick Diaz. Period.
  • Pat Militich's prophecy, "he's the best athlete in MMA," makesa little more sense after Tyron Woodley's raping of Andre Galvao.
  • A lesson in fundamental jiu jitsu defense and posturing a.k.a. "a message to Sarah Kaufman": Never over-extend your arms while in the guard of a highly dangerous submission specialist.
  • "The Punk" is back (as if he never left?)! Stunting for the cameras while on the mat is a cool way to gain extra points on the judges scorecards (30-27, really???).

Sweet revenge for Nick Diaz.

Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz retained the title and learned the sweetness of revenge, as he defeated K.J. Noons in a 5-round barn burner. The unanimous decision victory avenged a 2007 loss to Noons. That loss is Diaz's last, and since then the Caesar Gracie black belt has won all eight of his bouts.

Rising Strikeforce welterweight Tyron Woodley said before his match with Andre Galvao that he would avoid a ground fight with the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champion. Woodley stuck to his word, knocking out his Brazilian opponent in the first round. Woodley remains perfect, improving his record to 7-0.

The Arm-Breaker, Marloes Coenen.

Submission specialist Marloes Coenen returns to Holland with the Strikeforce women's welterweight belt in hand, following her "didn't-feel-you-tap"-armbar submission of former champion Sarah Kaufman.

The Punk ain't no punk!

Josh Thomson took home the dub in seemingly close fashion, winning a unanimous decision over Gesias "JZ" Calvacante, who made his Strikeforce debut. You can bet JZ's work isn't done with the San Jose-based promotions. As for Thomson, you can almost hear the knocks at Gilbert Melendez's door.
