Kimbo's Move to Boxing might be the Wrong Move

Kevin 'Kimbo Slice' Ferguson will always be remembered as one of MMA's most profitable and marketable figures. He was a streetfighter who transformed Youtube fame into a brief but successful mixed martial arts career. Now, it appears that Ferguson, most popularly known as 'Kimbo' will make yet another combat sports move, this time to the boxing ring.

But I can't help but to wonder if this move is an immature one, or is it even necessary at all? You see, Kimbo Slice was good for MMA. He brought new fans to the sport, and he proved that a raw streetfighter could acquire some of the skills that mixed martial arts requires. Kimbo received much criticism from the media and fans who couldn't see his street-style boxing skills translating into any extent of an MMA career. This was most especially true with his move to the UFC. But, Kimbo disproved the critics when he faced Houston Alexander at the TUF 10 Finale. In his first sanctioned UFC match, Kimbo employed several textbook takedowns and throws, surprising fans with his newly acquired wrestling abilities. Sure Kevin Ferguson is no Matt Lindland or Randy Couture, but at 36 years old the man deserves some credit for opening himself up to a whole new style of fighting and making a decent run at it.

Kevin Ferguson's desire to try MMA says a lot when he probably could have opted for boxing from the jump, and earn a much bigger payday. Yes, Ferguson will likely make ridiculous earnings as a boxer simply because he is 'Kimbo,' but that's all he will earn. For every boxing dollar in his pocket, Kimbo Slice will loose an ounce of his pride, knowing that he abandoned the sport that made a streetfighter into a professional. Although he probably would have landed sideshow gigs in Japan, or with smaller start-up promos (Kimbo vs. Mariusz Pudzianowski, LOL), Ferguson's draw to mixed martial arts was magical, and I'm really not sure if the boxing ring will do his fighting career much justice.
