Tournament off, Souza and Kennedy to fight for Strikeforce Middleweight Title

Strikeforce has abandoned it's previously highly touted middleweight tournament idea, for a single middleweight championship bout. The now vacant Strikeforce Middleweight Title will be filled by one of two top contenders--Tim Kennedy or Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza. The two will meet at Strikeforce: Houston on August 21.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, or TDLR, denied Strikeforce's request for a tournament-style event. So, Strikeforce was forced to seek other options--determining top contention in the organization, hence landing the Kennedy vs. Souza bout.

Meanwhile, former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields has been dropped by Strikeforce, following unsuccessful contract discussions. Shields has been in negotiations with the UFC and is expected to sign soon. He has even been quoted saying that he would also like to see the UFC sign his Caesar Gracie teammates Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez.
