They Put Him in the 'Mix': MC Hammer in Mixed Martial Arts

Hip Hop recording artst MC Hammer has teamed up with Lex McMahon (stepson of Ed McMahon) and lawyer Nima Safapour to form Alchemist Management, a fighter management and marketing firm. The Alchemist website identifies Hammer as its CEO, and boasts a stable of fighters that includes Vladimir Matyushenko, Tim Kennedy, Nate Marquardt, and James McSweeney.

Other rap artists who have attempted or are involved in mixed martial arts:
  • Ruff Ryders captain DMX was set to fight record producer/actor Eric Martinez in November of 2009. Following a disagreement with the promotion, 'X' withdrew his name from the card. West Coast rapper Coolio followed up as the replacement, but the entire event was eventually cancelled due to poor ticket sales.
  • Snoop Dogg added to UFC 114 Expo weekend highlights in June by signing as president of Serious Pimp clothing. Serious Pimp is a gansteresque-style, fight inspired clothing line with a raw West Coast feel. The brand has sponsored Nick Diaz, Cris 'Cyborg' Santos, and Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson. Bishop 'Don Magic' Juan sits as the line's chairman of the board, while "Jersey Shore's" Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino has been designated to oversee their Eastcoast operations.
  • No Limit Records founder and CEO Percy Miller, a.k.a. 'Master P,' sat in as a celebrity guest judge at Worldwide Gladiator Championshi: Fight for Hait. WGC was a charity event established to raise funds for the children of the earthquake-routed island of Haiti. 'P' joined stars Chamillionaire, LeToya Luckett, and Vince Young for the throwdown which took place on April 9th in Pasadena, Texas.
  • In 2008 Black Entertainment Television (BET) launched "Iron Ring," a mixed martial arts reality series with a hip hop twist. The format: athletes tried out for the show and were split into teams, managed by prominent hip hop artists. Floyd Mayweather, T.I., Ludacris, Nelly, Juelz Santana, and Lil' John represented MMA teams for the show.
