Impact Fighting Championships quick fix for Summer MMA withdrawal

To the average MMA fan cage action hits a dry spell every year around this time. Barbecues, beaches, and swimming pools tend to keep folks away from the t.v.

Potential viewer numbers take a drastic dip in mid-summer, so the majors (UFC, WEZC, Strikeforce, and Bellator) usually fall back, regroup, and make their comeback in August.

Dream 15, and Strikeforce Challengers Series are the two big show exceptions for the month of July, but hardcore MMA fans in the midst of withdrawal may find a quick fix in some smaller but power-packed shows on the July fight schedule.

Your quick fix . . . Impact Fighting Championships.

Australian start-up promotion Impact Fighting Championships or 'Impact FC' plans to produce its first two events this month. The first of which will boast a roster of familiar names, including Josh Barnett, Karo Parisyan, and Carlos Newton.

At Impact FC 1: "The Uprising: Bisbane," Josh Barnett, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion, will face Geronimo Dos Santos who will be making his first cage appearance outside of his home, Brazil.

Karo Parisyan will also face a Brazilian fighter in Luis Dutra. Meanwhile, a mixed martial arts staple, Carlos Newton, will look to continue a two fight win streak as he takes on well-experienced Brian Ebersole (41-15).

On July 18, IFC 2: "The Uprising: Sydney" will feature perhaps MMA's biggest name in Ken Shamrock who will take on fellow UFC vet Pedro Rizzo. Bob Sapp, Murilo Rua, Jesse Taylor, and Paul Daley will also contribute to the stacked fight card.

Still, the fight not to be missed is Paulo Filho vs. Dennis Kang.

Paulo Filho holds black belts in Judo and BJJ. At 20-1, Filho boasts wins from the DEEP, Pride, WEC, and Dream promotions. He is a grinder with a fierce style, who can grapple with the best.

The name Dennis Kang makes this card. Kang is on a mission, seeking redemption since his TKO loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 105. Since then, Kang has signed with W-1 in Canada. He fought Dae Won Kim at W-1 Judgement Day in June, winning with an arm bar submission. A win over Paulo Filho at IFC 2 could put Kang back in the fighter spotlight. We can expect Kang to arrive in shape, as his conditioning is always top notch. Dennis Kang truly defines 'mixed' martial artist. His striking and grappling abilities make him an extremely well rounded fighter.

The Impact Fighting Championships is just what the doctor ordered for Summer 2010.
